This guide provides an overview of a Texas schoolwide study skills program that accommodates individual student learning styles.
Abstract
The described schoolwide study skills program can help address the learning requirements of all students, including those at risk of dropping out of school. First, it provides teachers with strategies that accommodate variations in student learning styles. Second, it provides students with training in study skills, so as to "learn how to learn" and thus achieve academic success. Also, it establishes a school system more responsive to the needs of a wider range of students. The program's goal is not to remediate specific at-risk students, but rather to adapt the educational system as a whole to better meet individual academic needs. Students are taught to learn and to manage the study skills (both cognitive and metacognitive) that are necessary for learning. The study skills program improves teachers' pedagogical skills by showing them practical ways to apply learning principles to classroom instruction. It modifies and adapts instruction to meet the needs of all student learning styles by using multisensory teaching methods. Alternative teaching methods improve achievement through cooperative learning. By enabling students to reach learning goals, the program improves their self-image as capable learners. Other program benefits are the transfer of study skills to all content areas and prevention of the labeling of students. Glossary and 22 references
