This report describes the projects of the National Center for Juvenile Justice, whose mission is to prevent juvenile delinquency, child abuse, and child neglect, primarily through research and technical assistance.
Abstract
The Center conducts research in three areas: legal research, systems research, and applied research. This report profiles a sampling of the Center's work in these areas. The Accountability-Based Community Intervention Program in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh, Pa.) is a new initiative to develop an expanded array of intervention, treatment, and rehabilitation programs. The program's goal is to enable juvenile court judges, administrators, and probation officers to match juvenile offenders with the interventions that will best meet the needs of both the youth and the community. The Center projects in legal research described are the Automated Juvenile Law Archive, a computerized data retrieval system that provides rapid analyses of current, relevant statutory material; Kindex, a database of legal articles, organized by topic, on all aspects of children and the law; and the Juvenile and Family Law Digest, which highlights current legal topics that pertain to children and families. Some Center projects that involve systems research are the National Juvenile Court Data Archive, the Juvenile Justice Statistics and Systems Development Program, the Delays in Juvenile Justice Sanctions Project, and an investigation of the capacity of the new National Incident-Based Reporting Systems. The Technical Assistance to the Juvenile Court Project is profiled as an aspect of the Center's applied research. A financial statement for fiscal year 1993 is included, along with a list of sources of support.
