A grassroots student movement has been developing in recent years that uses campus media to focus on alternatives to violence, including sexual assault.
Abstract
At St. John's University, a men's college in Minnesota, the residents of the third floor of one dormitory decided on a slogan, Tommy 3 if Porno Free, to eliminate pictures of Playboy playmates on their walls. This 1993 event resulted in a campus-wide debate in the hallways, in classes, and in editorials and letters to the editor. This and other incidents resulted from the efforts of members of the Student Advocates Against Sexual Violence (SAASV), a student grassroots organization founded by men to speak out against sexual violence. The SAASV was one of the first student- initiated organizations of its kind. Similar organizations are emerging on other campuses, and national conferences have been held to focus on the issue of campus sexual violence. Many task forces, resource centers, rape prevention programs, and other efforts are now active. The extent to which men have joined the movement is particularly intriguing; these efforts appear to represent the development of a student aspect of the men's pro-feminist movement. 27 references
