This document concerns an education and counseling program for chemically dependent, battered women and the care providers who are dedicated to their safety and sobriety.
Abstract
The Grace Smith House program addresses the needs of chemically dependent women and their children. It attempts to give to professionals in the field insight into the circumstances that keep battered, chemically dependent women and their children at risk, and to develop new treatment models that approach these women's recovery needs in a safer, saner and more holistic way. The program includes five performance targets: (1) All families who enter a program shelter and remain at least 1 week will have a substance abuse assessment and receive referrals to appropriate services; (2) Victims of domestic violence will become knowledgeable of substance abuse issues and explore ways to maintain a life free of dependency; (3) Staff will become knowledgeable in the area of identification of and response to substance abuse issues; (4) Community agencies will become knowledgeable in how to respond to families experiencing the dual effects of domestic violence and substance abuse; and (5) Funding will be secured to maintain operation of the Domestic Violence/Substance Abuse Program.
