Guidelines to assist in the development or refinement of Designated Driver Programs (DDP) for adults are discussed.
Abstract
This guide is intended to help State traffic safety organizations, associations of bars, restaurants, and clubs; local and State government agencies; and others to develop or refine DDPs for adults. The guide focuses on how to develop and operated both drinker-based and server-based DDPs in an entire community. The guide discusses DDPs that operate year-round, but also should help those who want to operate DDPs for limited periods, such as during weekends and holidays. Nine sections included in the guide are: using a community-wide and comprehensive approach; staffing the program; establishing a community coalition; marketing the program; operating the program; publicizing the program; obtaining resources; evaluating the program; and additional sources for assistance. Information for the guide was obtained from various sources including two studies funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; conversations with researchers and operators of DDPs; a literature review; and a review of materials developed by existing DDPs. A listing of manuals and kits for DDPs is provided. A sample brochure and other promotional and instructional materials developed for a DDP in Haverhill, Massachusetts also is provided. References
