Violence is commonplace among criminals who are substance abusers. They think violence will allow them to gain control and will get them what they want. Violence is the only way to prove their manhood and be in control. This course seeks to empower men to see the errors in their thinking and make the necessary changes in their behavior. The principal strategy for change in this course is the Control Log, a tool that criminals can use to analyze what leads to their violent acts. An additional strategy is the Power and Control Wheel that helps the men examine their abusive relationships with women. Other teaching strategies are discussed. The course is divided into three units: Unit A--The Roots of Violence; Unit B--Becoming a Man Who Isn't Violent Toward Other Men; and Unit C--Becoming a Man Who Isn't Violent Toward Women and Children. Each unit is divided into modules and contains assignments for participants. The units target several specific audiences: African American, Latino, and Native American men.
