This report provides performance measures and key targets of the SPS during its first year as an Executive Agency of The Scottish Office. A facility-by-facility assessment is provided. Concerns addresses during the year included a reduction in the number of escapes, serious assaults on staff and prisoners, and other significant events; the provision of night sanitation facilities to prisoners; and increasing educational opportunities for prisoners. Performance measures and targets varied by facility. Also included in the report are 11 appendixes containing tabular data reflecting prison populations, breaches of discipline and punishments, prison industries, an SPS financial statement, SPS staffing, escapes from custody, prisoner complaints to the Secretary of State, staff absences due to sickness per facility, and Parliamentary responsiveness to correspondence. Recipients of various medals and awards also are listed in the report.
