After describing the School Outreach Program developed by Youth Services of Tulsa, Inc., this manual provides guidance for youth service agencies and schools in working cooperatively to implement a similar program in their communities.
Abstract
The program offers at-risk or troubled students long- term counseling and advocacy during the academic year. School outreach counselors depend on principals, assistant principals, deans, and teachers to identify students at risk of developing problems related to alcohol or drugs, or who are experiencing conflicts with peers, teachers, or family members. The School Outreach Program offers students and their families individual counseling, information and referral, client advocacy, group counseling, crisis intervention, and family counseling. Because of the program, many students overcome their problems before they become critical. It has a positive impact on schools by reducing the incidence of substance abuse, truancy, poor classroom performance, and dropping out of school. After providing an overview of the program, this manual explains how to get started by contracting with schools. This is followed by chapters with details on program structure, networking, program evaluation, staffing and staff development, and funding. 77-item bibliography and appended supplementary information
