The ultimate purpose of workshops is to improve the working relationship between courts and drug abuse treatment programs. Each workshop agenda consists of participatory presentations and exercises designed to expose barriers and build bridges between courts and treatment programs. The heart of the agenda is to make courts aware of what treatment programs require to improve the success rate of clients in treatment and to let treatment programs know what courts need to ensure that referral to treatment is in the interest of justice. Initiated in 1992, workshops were to have been completed by 1993. Materials included in the workshop manual focus on the pharmacology and etiology of drug abuse and on laws, regulations, and contracts that constrain drug treatment programs. Workshop materials also encompass confidentiality, treatment effectiveness, treatment versus incarceration, and juvenile treatment issues. A directory of drug abuse programs, sample forms to facilitate communication between courts and treatment providers, and a glossary are included. References, tables, and figures
