Sexual assault on campus is not a new phenomenon or a recent crisis; date or acquaintance rape has occurred on campuses for decades. At least three differences exist, however, between campuses of the past and campuses of the present: (1) attitudes toward male and female roles and responsibilities have changed; (2) the term "date or acquaintance rape" is now attached to the behavior; and (3) society is reframing perceptions of responsibility and blame for date or acquaintance rape. In response to changing contemporary views of date rape and sexual assault, social, medical, and legal services exist on many campuses. In addition, the Campus Awareness and Security Act requires institutions of higher education to provide education and prevention programs, as well as intervention and therapeutic services. The book covers a full spectrum of sexual assault concerns and offers practical suggestions, programs, policies, guidelines, and procedures to prevent sexual assault and to handle a sexual assault effectively. The first chapter includes an overview of sexual assault on campus. Subsequent chapters contain information on the development of a campus-based sexual assault program, the role of campus security in crime prevention, recovery needs of sexual assault victims, sexual assault and date rape awareness programming, and campus administrator sexual assault training. Appendixes contain further information on date rape, an orientation and preservice training program, a myths and facts quiz, information for rape victims and significant others, and a sexual assault newsletter. 116 references
