A committee of the Montgomery County (Md.) Government has recommended several strategies for involving governmental agencies, community service providers, and neighborhood and community groups in the county's community policing efforts.
Abstract
The strategies are designed to achieve two objectives. The first is to maximize the coordination, cooperation, and communication with governmental agencies, community service providers, and neighborhood and community groups. The second is to identify changes needed to existing laws and ordinances and to propose new legislation to facilitate community policing strategies. To develop specific strategies, the committee developed three subcommittees to focus on the first objective and two to focus on the second. Recommended actions include referral coordination with other county agencies for calls for nonpolice services, having a single coordinator within the Police Department's Office of Planning and Policy Management to coordinate grants and outside funds, and modifying certain traffic and parking citations from criminal citations to civil citations.
