More than 183,000 persons were arrested during the period studied. The arrestees were predominantly male (81.7 percent) and white (64.1 percent), and 38.7 percent were between ages 25 and 34. The youngest was a white male aged 12, and the oldest was a white male aged 91. The average age was 33 years. The offenders accounted for more than 337,000 arrest charges during the period studied. An arrest event could result in more than one arrest charge. Among the arrest charges, 14.6 percent were for the violent crimes of homicide, forcible sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft. Offenders with five or more arrest charges represented 5 percent of the total and were responsible for 17.3 percent of the charges. The offenders with the greatest number of charges varied in the degree of risk posed to the general public. Tables, appended definitions, and 5 references
