Approximately 6,500 appeals were made to the Court of Appeal in 1993. The number of appeals against conviction increased to more than 11,200 at the Crown Court and to just under 2,000 at the Court of Appeal. The proportion of appeals against convictions at magistrates' courts where the conviction was quashed was 38 percent in 1993, the same as in the previous 2 years. The proportion of successful appeals against convictions at the Crown Court remained at 16 percent in 1993, the same as in 1992. One-fourth of appeals against convictions for the more serious violence offenses were allowed on appeal in 1993, compared to 37 percent for all offenses at both courts. The rate of appeals against magistrates' sentences increased from 0.7 percent in each of the last 4 years to 1 percent in 1993. Figures and tables
