The aim of the Citizens for Peace Foundation (CPF) in Santiago, Chile, is to encourage values, principles, and institutions that facilitate peace and minimize criminal violence.
Abstract
In 1993, the CPF focused on attitudes and behavior patterns of the Chilean population with respect to violence, crime, terrorism, drug addiction, and citizen protection and solidarity; researched causes of socially disruptive behavior; studied Chilean laws and institutions related to criminal and terrorist behavior; and proposed legislative and institutional reforms to diminish or eradicate crime and terrorism. Specific activities were undertaken by the CPF to modify the criminal justice system, modernize the prison system and rehabilitate convicts, rationalize police resources, and link drug addiction and trafficking with common crime and juvenile violence. These activities involved community work, media campaigns, the creation of a documentation and statistical data center, roundtables and seminars, and international contacts. The CPF's institutional structure and financial status are described, and activities planned during 1994 are summarized.
