Developed by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, this curriculum contains 16 lessons dealing with police firearms training and 10 lessons focusing on chemical agent use.
Abstract
The curriculum is designed to help students understand the operation and nomenclature of semiautomatic handguns, revolver-type handguns, and shotguns; the effective range and spread of different barrel and load combinations commonly used in police weapons; and the effective use of handguns and shotguns in combat situations. With respect to chemical agents, the curriculum is intended to help students understand legal aspects of using nonlethal chemical agents, the safe and effective use of hand-held chemical agents and gas masks, and effects of nonlethal chemical agents. Exercises in the firearms section of the curriculum cover handgun and shotgun handling, weapon cleaning and storage, handgun and shotgun marksmanship, shooting positions, and weapon ranges. Lessons in the chemical agents section of the curriculum deal with the evolution of chemical agents, chemical agent types and delivery methods, aerosol chemical agent deployment tactics, maintenance and disposal of aerosol chemical agent devices, and the use of gas masks. Performance objectives and learning activities are included, along with supporting materials and references that demonstrate weapon use. Illustrations
