This 1993 Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) presents statistics on the Crime Index, crimes cleared, persons arrested, homicide patterns past and present, and law enforcement personnel.
Abstract
The UCR provides a nationwide view of crime based on statistics provided by State and local law enforcement agencies. Population size is the only correlate of crime used in the report, although an overview of other crime factors is provided in the introduction. Following a section that summarizes the UCR program, a section provides data on Crime Index offenses, which include the violent crimes of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault and the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The trend data show that the number of reported offenses for 1993 were 14,140,952 compared to 14,438,191 for 1992, a 2.1-percent decrease. The crime rate per 100,000 inhabitants decreased 3.1 percent. Violent crimes numbered 1,924,188 for 1993, a 0.4-percent decrease from 1992 and a decrease in rate of 1.5 percent. Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter increased 3.2 percent and the rate per 100,000 inhabitants increased 2.2 percent. Forcible rape decreased 3.9 percent. Property crimes numbered 12,216,764, a 2.3-percent decrease and a rate decrease of 3.4 percent. Data for each offense are presented by city and State. Crimes of violence cleared by arrest reached 66 percent for murder; aggravated assault, 56 percent; forcible rape, 53 percent; and robbery, 24 percent. Clearance rates for crimes against property were 13 percent for burglary; larceny-theft, 20 percent; and motor vehicle theft, 14 percent.
