This report presents five articles about corrections management, programs, and policies in Europe; data regarding inmate populations in the member countries of the Council of Europe; and news items about legislation and regulation and other aspects of corrections in Europe.
Abstract
Individual papers describe the Demosthenes Program, which the Council of Europe has promoted to develop links between the countries of central and southwest Europe; the historical background, evolution, influence, and probable future development of the European Prison Rules; and the importance of the concepts of normalization, openness, and responsibility in a modern treatment philosophy. Other papers focus on the organization of imprisonment, the treatment of prisoners, and the preparation of inmates for release and the recruitment, training, and use of correctional personnel.
