Focusing primarily on juvenile offenders in community and institutional settings, this book gathers 32 meta-analyses and literature reviews of intervention effectiveness and examines their findings collectively.
Abstract
The first chapter describes the different ways that meta- analyses and literature reviews integrate information from numerous studies and how these methods provide insight into different, as well as overlapping, aspects of intervention. This examination summarizes 10 of the 32 meta-analyses and literature reviews, focusing on their findings and conclusions for correctional intervention overall. Two subsequent chapters present the results of the 32 analyses for each of 20 intervention approaches individually, and then describe the major trends regarding intervention that emerge from the collective findings. The second set of chapters propose a new direction for intervention research that would study a combination of features comprising given programs. The final chapters focus on technical and conceptual issues, such as success criteria and the nature of decisive factors. This book's review of 20 types of interventions identifies several types that are more likely to reduce recidivism. 10 appendixes, chapter notes, and 184 references
