Using concepts and approaches from the field of science studies, the authors investigated how the problem has been introduced to the public and by whom. The study focused on how the issue has appeared in the printed media, including articles in professional journals and reports by experts. Of interest in this investigation was whether there had been any frequently used channels of communication, whether there were any authors contributing more often than others, and whether there were hypothesized strategies present in the construction of the problem. Also of interest was when the issue was introduced to the public. The authors identified what they call a "knowledge- based controversy." The frequency of child sexual abuse, the methods of diagnosing it, and the role of the investigator are disputed. Apparently, clinical child psychologists are especially engaged in this problem construction and in controversy with other professionals. Various strategies are chosen to increase professional legitimacy and exclude others' claims to expertise on the subject. The authors conclude that currently there is no indication that psychologists have reached a more comprehensive experience or unified knowledge of child sexual abuse than any competing professional group that is dealing with the issue. 16 notes and 89 references
