This report discusses various types of community corrections in Texas, in light of the fact that correctional capacity in Texas will increase by 112 percent between September 1993 and December 1995, and that Texas may have the largest correctional system in the U.S. by the end of that period.
Abstract
Probationers can be placed into various supervision programs making up a continuum of sanctions. These include regular supervision, intensive supervision, specialized supervision (i.e., substance abuse felony punishment facilities), residential services, electronic monitoring, ancillary programs, and State jail facilities. Types of intensive supervision programs include day reporting centers, intensive supervision probation, and surveillance probation. There are also different types of residential services for Texas inmates: restitution centers, intermediate sanction facilities, boot camps, court residential treatment centers, substance abuse treatment facilities, and treatment programs for mentally impaired offenders. Ancillary programs might include battering and intervention prevention programs, community service restitution, contract services, employment services, literacy and education programs, and pretrial and presentence services.
