Mechanisms for conditional release in Canada include full parole, day parole, temporary absence, and statutory release. During this period, parole boards in Canada made 21,338 decisions concerning full parole and granted full parole in 10,317 cases. The full parole grant rate was 34 percent for Federal inmates and 57 percent for provincial offenders. During 1992 and 1993, there was an average of 7,611 parolees on full parole, 2,014 on day parole, and 2,357 on statutory release. During the reporting period, 82 percent of paroles granted under the jurisdiction of provincial boards were concluded successfully. Research data indicate that 70 percent of Federal parolees completed their sentence without returing to Federal custody. 6 tables and 2 figures
