This manual presents new forms and procedures for all wiretap investigations conducted by the Suffolk County Police Department.
Abstract
The first section of the report outlines procedures for the use of original and simultaneous copy cassette tapes. Procedures address the marking of tapes, types of tapes to be used, recording technique, and malfunctioning tape operations. Wiretap logs and the wiretap log worksheet have been redesigned. The modifications made are described in this manual. The telephone number data card has also been redesigned to facilitate filing, entering, and saving telephone numbers intercepted in the course of a wiretap. Additional information added on the card is listed in the manual. Due to court of appeals decisions and the policy of the District Attorney's Office, the manual lists the paperwork and items that are to be retained upon completion of a wiretap investigation. Other procedures presented and discussed pertain to general responsibilities; duties of the coordinator, monitors, and surveillance officers; and applicable legal information and laws.
