The functions of the Probation and Parole Services (PPS) within Florida's Department of Corrections are described, and summary data on probation and parole caseloads are provided.
Abstract
The PPS is responsible for identifying offender needs; developing probation, parole, and community control policies; developing plans, directives, rules, and regulations that will facilitate the work of regional probation and parole services; and evaluating the effectiveness of probation and parole services in accordance with Florida statutes. Caseload data for fiscal year 1992 indicate that 81,232 offenders were on probation and 2,502 offenders were on parole statewide. About 26,000 offenders were released into other forms of community supervision. Data are provided by region on the PPS budget, staff, electronic monitoring of offenders, nonsecure drug treatment beds, long-term residential treatment beds, and probation and restitution centers. A brief description of supervision types is provided, and minimum training requirements for PPS employees are delineated. The role of the Department of Corrections' Interstate Compact Bureau in approving entry into and departure from Florida is discussed. 9 tables and 3 figures
