The report's utility is further enhanced by the inclusion of 8-year trends on selected youth characteristics. The number of admissions reached 2,474 in 1993, representing the second largest intake in recent history. Non-Latino white youth comprised 35 percent of all custody admissions in 1986; this figure had declined to 20 percent in 1993. At the same time, admissions of non-Latino African-Americans increased from 48 to 56 percent, and those of Latinos of all races increased from 16 to 23 percent of all admissions.
