This report provides a narrative and statistical overview of all the youth placed by the courts in the New York State Division for Youth's (DFY's) custody, regardless of the setting in which they were served.
Abstract
Pertinent data relating to residential services, alternative residential services, and community care are included. The format recognizes the importance of the entire range of care provided to adjudicated youth. The report provides detailed information on admissions, in-custody populations, and discharges. The report's utility is further enhanced by the inclusion of 8-year trends on selected youth characteristics. The number of admissions reached 2,474 in 1993, representing the second largest intake in recent history. Non-Latino white youth comprised 35 percent of all custody admissions in 1986; this figure had declined to 20 percent in 1993. At the same time, admissions of non-Latino African-Americans increased from 48 to 56 percent, and those of Latinos of all races increased from 16 to 23 percent of all admissions. Information on alternative residential programs provides information on alternative residential programs operated during 1993, characteristics of youth entering alternative residential services during 1993, characteristics of youth in alternative residential programs at the end of 1993, and length of stay for youth released from alternative residential programs during 1993. 11 figures, 10 tables, and a subject index
