One chapter assesses mentoring as a strategy for reaffirming young African-American males and guiding them toward positive achievement. Mentoring is envisioned as one component of a multifaceted approach designed to improve the life chances of African-American youths. Another chapter assesses the current health status of African-American males. Drawing on national data, the author shows that African-American males fare poorly when compared to their white counterparts on a wide range of health indicators. A third chapter discusses "coolin" among African-American and Latino men by exploring the connections between "male posturing" among these two ethnically distinct groups. The author shows how the psychosocial communication of African-American and Latino men can have important implications for positive interventions with them. A fourth chapter addresses the mental health of elderly African-American men, followed by a chapter on the gender role and contraceptive attitudes of young African-American men. Other chapters consider urban adolescent homicidal violence as an emerging public health concern, pastoral counseling with African-American men, and the role of African American-owned radio in health promotion.
