A survey by Corrections Compendium revealed that $5.1 billion will be spent on 151 new State prison facilities and 117 additions to State prisons during 1994-95. More than 125,000 beds will be added to State prisons during the year. The Federal Bureau of Prisons plans $1.6 billion in new facility construction to add 27,827 beds. At the end of 1993, the number of Federal and State prisoners reached a record high of 948,881. The prison population has increased nearly 188 percent since 1980. Total corrections budgets for 49 States, the District of Columbia, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons were $21.9 billion in 1993-94. As of mid-1992, an estimated 445,584 people were confined in local jails, a 4 percent increase from the year before. Twenty-two jurisdictions reported a total of 50,966 State prisoners held in local jails or other facilities because of crowding in State facilities. Figures and tables
