This press release reports that a Northeastern University analysis of FBI crime statistics has revealed that juveniles and young adults are committing murder and violent crimes in the United States at higher rates than ever before, even as demographic reports indicate that they now make up a smaller percentage of the population.
Abstract
In addition, only towns with fewer than 10,000 people experienced little or no increase in violent crime between 1985 and 1991, when the homicide rate increased by 24 percent and violent crime increased by 36 percent. Criminal homicide arrest rates for adult and juvenile males increased by as much as 217 percent for 15-year-olds. This phenomenon is widespread geographically. The study also revealed that during the 1980's, the number of prison inmates rose to an historic high of 823,000, a 67 percent increase. Figures and tables
