A total of 41,501 index offenses were reported or known to law enforcement agencies, excluding the Omaha Police Department, in 1993. The violent crimes of murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and felony assault accounted for 5.2 percent of the total index offenses. The property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson accounted for 94.8 percent of the total offenses. Larceny-theft was the most frequently reported crime, accounting for 74.9 percent of the total crimes reported. Based on an estimated population figure of 1,265,501 (excluding the City of Omaha), the crime rate per 1,000 population was 32.8 in 1993. The crime rate for violent crimes was 1.7 per 1,000 population. There were 31.1 property crimes per 1,000 population. A total of 9,937 index offenses were reported cleared during 1993, a clearance rate of 23.9 percent. Murder, manslaughter had the highest clearance rate, 92.6 percent. Violent crimes had a clearance rate of 69.3 percent, and crimes against property had a clearance rate of 21.4 percent. Persons under the age of 18 accounted for 20.3 percent of the total arrests. A total of 161 assaults on police officers were reported in 1993, a decrease of 24 percent from 1992. One law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty during 1993. 37 tables and 12 figures
