A total of $14.6 billion in Federal drug control resources is requested in fiscal year 1996 for drug demand reduction and supply reduction activities, an increase of $1.3 billion over fiscal year 1995. The budget includes significant increases in all major program areas except interdiction. The largest area of the drug control budget is the criminal justice system; of the total $14.6 billion requested, $7.2 billion is for the criminal justice system, an increase of $854 million over last year. Prevention efforts receive 13.6 percent of budget resources, and treatment efforts will be funded with 19.4 percent of the total budget. Interdiction efforts will receive 8.8 percent of the budget. The major budget initiatives give communities more resources to better respond to their particular drug problems; change the manner in which Federal prevention and treatment funds are provided to States; focus on reducing drug use by expanding drug treatment to those inside and outside the criminal justice system; and enhance international programs.
