Established to focus on the problem of prison overcrowding, the Nebraska Task Force on Prison Alternatives was divided into four working committees.
Abstract
The Front-End Committee focused on strategies to reduce the number of individuals admitted to prison and to reduce sentence length. The Institutions Committee examined the existing inmate classification system, the adequacy of existing programs, the reduction of recidivism, the use of available resources within the State, and disciplinary procedures that could prolong the stay of individuals in prison. The Back-End Committee looked at interventions designed to regulate the time inmates served and to speed their release from prison. The Community Corrections Committee reviewed the total concept of community-based correctional programs. The Task Force's final report describes the work of each committee and includes detailed recommendations to reduce prison overcrowding through community-based alternatives to incarceration. Additional information on the work of the Task Force is appended. 15 tables and 6 figures
