This document lists and summarizes all laws requiring convicted sex offenders to register in some manner with a central registry or with local law enforcement.
Abstract
Twenty-five States have such laws. They specify the crimes that are included, the time period within which the offender must notify law enforcement authorities or others, the responsibility of State or local law enforcement agencies to maintain a register or roster of the names of all persons registered, and the expiration of responsibility for registration. A separate section explains the function of the National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse, which was founded by the American Prosecutors Research Institute in 1985.
