Data for this statistical summary of U.S. corrections were obtained from surveys completed by State adult and juvenile correctional personnel, as well as employees of probation and parole departments.
Abstract
The first section presents statistics related to correctional personnel, specifically staff numbers in State and Federal institutions, jails and adult detention facilities, probation and parole agencies, and juvenile detention facilities; salaries at the Federal, State, and county levels; benefits; education and training; and affiliation with unions and other employee groups. The subsequent sections cover correctional expenditures in both State and Federal systems, as well as jails and detention centers; correctional populations; and correctional summaries. The final section provides an overview of the American Correctional Association in terms of its code of ethics and selected public correctional policies related to staff recruitment and development, crowding and excessive workloads, and employment of women in corrections.
