The use of electronic technology ranging from phone-in foreign language translators to instant computerized transcription is significantly changing court administration and can also assist attorneys.
Abstract
The technology includes remote two-way television arraignment and witness examination, access to legal databases, recorded or real-time televised evidence display, built-in video deposition playback facilities, multicamera video recording of trial proceedings, computer monitors for jury members and wall monitors to display live testimony or images from other sources, private headphones, and automated court scheduling and law firm voice-mail. Litigators should learn what the new technology can do to assist case preparation and presentation. The three areas that should receive particular attention are developments in court records, the potential use of computer graphics and animations, and televideo communications.
