A statistical analysis of relevant data shows the magnitude of the problem of firearms deaths and injuries among children and adolescents; promising intervention approaches have been mounted by various governmental agencies, professional associations, national organizations, and community organizations.
Abstract
This study uses various data sources to examine firearm mortality and morbidity rates in the United States, U.S. firearm rates compared to other developed countries, rates of African- American males killed by guns compared to white male firearm victims, children's accessibility to guns, psychological trauma due to firearm deaths and injuries, and financial costs due to firearm deaths and injuries. The data and analyses show the magnitude of firearm deaths and injuries, particularly among children and adults 10 to 34 years of age (second leading cause of death in this age group) and among African-American males. There are some promising intervention approaches used by Federal and State agencies, professional associations, national organizations, and community-based organizations. The interventions are of three basic types: educational, legal, and technological/environmental. A comprehensive approach that includes a combination of such strategies is most likely to reduce firearm violence.
