Corrections statistics for fiscal year 1993 (FY93) for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (DRC) are provided.
Abstract
According to this report, FY93 was a pivotal year for the DRC, one involving many changes in the operation of the fifth largest prison system in the United States. Highlights of the accomplishments for the DRC correctional team include progress towards the accreditation for Central Office and several prisons; the initiation of a public awareness effort to encourage community corrections as an alternative to prison for nonviolent offenders; and the introduction of numerous quality-focused changes in the DRC. The 11-day siege in Lucasville at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF), which occurred in April 1993, is discussed. Changes implemented at the SOCF are explained. Efforts to recruit minority staff at the SOCF as well as other institutions are described. Plans to neutralize gang activity and other disruptive inmate groups are examined. Numerous graphs and charts are provided including: an organizational chart; graphs and charts describing data regarding entries and exits, inmate population by offense, intake by county, age, race, and gender of the inmate population; tested reading levels upon admission; and a profit and loss statement. A directory containing prison addresses and telephone numbers as well as addresses and telephone numbers of other corrections-related facilities is included.
