In the Fall of 1990, the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Corrections Juvenile Division, initiated the Hand-in-Hand mentoring program. This program is designed to provide supportive relationships to youths who have been adjudicated by the juvenile justice system. Each adjudicated youth is paired with a college student who agrees to participate in a one-on-one relationship, as a mentor, at least 4 hours per week for one semester. Mentors serve as role models and help to ease the youth's transition back into community and family life. This booklet briefly describes the initial program's participants. The remainder of the booklet provides an outline for communities considering the institution of a similar mentoring program. Topics discussed include determining goals and objectives; establishing relationships with corrections officials and the college community; recruiting mentors by well-organized publicity and recruitment efforts; and screening and training of mentor applicants. A list of important issues to keep in mind when conducting a mentoring program is provided. Appendixes include a sample screening application form, an outline for the contents of a policy and procedure manual, a weekly student mentor hour report form, and a mentor mileage expense report form.
