Abstract
Operating expenditures on corrections totaled approximately $1.88 billion in 1993-94, including $882 million federally and $994.1 million provincially. The average provincial inmate population was 19,481, an increase of 0.6 percent over 1992-93, while the average Federal inmate population increased 8 percent to 13,322. Provincial admissions increased to 240,841, while Federal admissions reached 8,677. While 78 percent of the total correctional caseload were under some form of community supervision, only 10 percent of the total correctional operating expenditures were for the provision of these services. The median sentence length for provincial facilities was 31 days and for Federal penitentiaries was 46.3 months. Tables
