This report presents and explains the interim final regulations for the architectural requirements for courthouses, jails, and prisons under the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990.
Abstract
The regulations specify the minimum level of accessibility in alterations and new construction. The regulations cover common-use areas, entrances used by the public, noncontact visiting areas, the number of inmate cells or rooms that must be accessible, accessibility of routes or paths of travel, and audible and emergency warning systems in housing areas. Specific topics covered include doors, entrances, security systems, counters, communication devices, seats, medical care facilities, toilet facilities, beds, fountains, storage facilities, and control mechanisms.
