This report presents an inventory of all buildings at San Quentin State Prison in California.
Abstract
San Quentin's buildings were classified by the functions they house (i.e., administration, staff services and training, visiting, inmate programs, education, food services) in accordance with State Standards for Prison Construction issued by the California Department of Corrections. The report finds that San Quentin does not conform very closely to the space allocations specified in those Standards. There is excessive space devoted to administration and control functions and a deficit in space allocated to direct inmates services, such as education and visiting. These discrepancies could not easily be revoked through a reallocation of space within existing buildings, many of which have reached the end of the normal life span of buildings of their construction. Nonetheless, because the State needs the prison space provided at San Quentin, some renovations have been started; any major remodeling should, however, be undertaken with a master plan based on the information provided in this inventory. 9 tables and 2 appendixes
