The Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy (RIMPTA) has developed a training program to prepare law enforcement officers for dealing more effectively with older citizens; to understand the attitudes, capabilities, and limitations of older persons; and to communicate better with this population.
Abstract
To reach its goals of improving police services and establishing positive relations with the State's senior citizens, the training program addresses the demographics of aging, myths and facts of aging, interaction with older persons, fear and victimization, and fraud and confidence schemes. Guest speakers from other State agencies discuss topics ranging from Alzheimer's disease to elder abuse and housing security. RIMPTA's training program also supports the Rhode Island Senior Citizens Police Advocate Program, in which an advocate in placed in each police department in the State. RIMPTA trains all new municipal police officer recruits and hosts an annual 1-day follow-up seminar with the Senior Citizens Police Advocates.
