This study sought to evaluate the scholarly productivity of American institutions of higher learning by recording author affiliation for articles published in the top 10 criminal justice journals for the period between 1983 and 1992.
Abstract
The journals selected for inclusion in this study were Criminology, Law and Society Review, Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Journal of Criminal Justice, Crime and Delinquency, British Journal of Criminology, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, and Criminal Justice and Behavior. Of the 2,353 articles published in the 10 journals, there were 4,158 authors, nearly 84 percent of whom were affiliated with various universities or colleges. All but 15 percent of these authors were U.S. residents. Most authors were affiliated with criminal justice or criminology programs, followed by sociology or social work, psychology or psychiatry, political science or public administration, and legal studies or law. The 14 most productive institutions accounted for over 25 percent of the articles written by authors affiliated with U.S. universities. Most of these top- ranked institutions offered doctorates in criminal justice. 3 tables, 15 notes, and 30 references
