The manual on the development of a school-based violence prevention strategy begins with a discussion of why schools should be involved in ending violence and promoting equality. This is followed by a section on who should be involved in such a program and how to gain their commitment. Another section provides guidelines for awareness and professional-development sessions on violence in relationships, to be presented to school personnel and parents. A discussion of a safe school climate and zero tolerance of violence precedes guidelines for the development of elementary and secondary school strategies for violence prevention. Remaining sections of the manual address the handling of student disclosures of witnessing violence at home, barriers to program development and how to overcome them, critical issues, evaluation, the development of an action plan, and a list of resources. The video that accompanies the manual is intended for showing to teachers and school administrators who are embarking on school-based or systemwide violence-prevention programs.
