Each detention facility's policy and procedure should include the determination that the juvenile is legally committed to the facility, a complete search of the juvenile and the positions, recording of personal data, medical and mental health screening, provision of written orientation materials, and many other topics. Staff also need to recognize the importance of a smooth admission process, because it sets the tone, establishes the flavor for the entire stay in detention, and will probably affect the outcome. Each detention facility should establish clear policies and procedures to ensure that the experience is a positive one. Staff should also address issues such as fear and apprehension, hostility, and depression and suicidal behavior. 8 references
