Rapid growth of the restaurant company Rally's Hamburgers, Inc., led to management's decision in 1993 to overcome its fragmented approach to loss prevention by forming a special asset protection department to implement a comprehensive security strategy.
Abstract
The four-member department includes a director, a staff member who serves as a field investigator, another staff member who focuses on background investigations, and a fourth staff member who addresses workers' compensation issues. All team members are cross-trained in all duties to allow for a fluid organization in which all members assist one another. After analyzing the current situation, the team decided to implement a new security program in two phases. Phase one would address physical security, policies and procedures, loss reporting, and training. Phase two involved the reorganization of background screening and workers' compensation procedures, dealing with liability issues, and investigations. Although many of the challenges presented to Rally's security department are unique to the food service industry, the basic team approach can be adapted to any organization. Photographs
