This paper provides an overview of the elements of corporate drug policies that generally aim at addressing one or more of three intermediate goals, as means of reducing costs, protecting assets, and improving the welfare of employees: altering the composition of the workforce by screening out employees with potentially problematic drug use patterns; deterring drug use, or at least drug use at the worksite or approximate to worktime, by threats of adverse employment action; or reducing drug use and its consequences by persuasion, or by providing encouragement and services to those who want to alter their own habits. Pre-employment chemical screening, no-smoking and no-alcohol policies, and employee assistance programs are briefly covered. The paper stresses, however, that companies need to undertake a comprehensive study of the extent of their own specific drug problems before implementing policies and procedures that may fail to address the specific problems of their workforces.
