In 1992 and 1993, the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole continued its commitment to reducing prison overcrowding while maintaining community safety. Efforts continue in the implementation of wide-ranging intermediate sanctions as alternatives to incarceration for parole violators, the use of special intensive supervision programs, the use of "half-way back" programs for parole violators, and in the provision of treatment opportunities for rehabilitation. Efforts to advance probation and parole strategies and services include the development of innovative supervision techniques, management strategies, and adequate resources to meet the challenges of the future. Statistics address number of professional staff, caseloads, investigation reports, and average entrance salaries. Other data pertain to financial expenditures, case decisions by type of board actions, types of hearings and interviews conducted by board members and hearing examiners, trends in interviews and hearings over the last three fiscal years, and number of inmates considered for parole by State correctional institutions. New enrollments by type of victim are shown for fiscal years 1991-92 and 1992-93. The trend in parole outcome after 3 years of supervision is also shown. 33 tables
