This report discusses issues related to staff training and recruitment in the Canadian Ministry of Correctional Services.
Abstract
The first part of the report provides background information on the need to revitalize the Ministry's staff training and development functions, as well as its methods for recruiting and selecting new correctional officers. The second section outlines an integrated correctional officer recruitment, selection, and basic training model and identifies the key knowledge, skills, and abilities required for correctional officers. The draft training curriculum presented here includes two pre-employment components and a 3-month on-the-job training program. The final section of the report reviews the current system of training and development and proposes the creation of a sustainable learning system for the Ministry. 6 figures, 2 tables, 14 appendixes, and 140 references
