Abstract
The first article describes the present situation in the Ukraine vis-a-vis crime and law enforcement. The second article presents a Canadian perspective on changes in the role and organization of the police through the year 2000. This excerpt from a background document on the topic of the future of policing deals with resource management and traces the shift from a traditional professional model to a community approach. The articles on crime included in this issue describe organized crime in India, focusing on drug-trafficking, terrorist activity, smuggling, and money laundering, and on the illicit drug trade flourishing in the Near and Middle East. The special feature presents an overview of books and article relating to private investigation and the private detective industry, highlighting relations between the police and the private investigative sector. The final article summarizes results from INTERPOL's 22nd European Regional Conference.
