This paper summarizes 11 lectures presented at the Fourth Colloquium on Crime and Criminal Policy in Europe, attended by 40 participants who came mainly from England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
Abstract
Topics included recent developments in research on self- reported juvenile delinquency, recent developments in victimization surveys and methods of correcting their weaknesses, experiments with the controlled distribution of heroin and other narcotics in Switzerland, and prison overcrowding and other aspects of the crisis in corrections. Other papers focused on the Fourth United Nations Survey on crime trends and the operations of criminal justice systems and on the European Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics. Specific issues included differences in research designs in different countries and their impacts on the comparability of the results; problems in victimization surveys related to domestic assault, business victimization, and victim surveys directed at foreigners; the role of parole in reducing prison overcrowding; and the role of the European Sourcebook project in facilitating comparisons among European countries.
