A study was carried out at Her Majesty's Prison Woodhill (England) to examine the attitudes of staff and inmates towards HIV and whether or not condoms should be made available to prisoners.
Abstract
The responses reflected a cross-section of both staff and inmates in the prison at the time. Results from the survey indicated that both staff and inmates perceived the HIV prevalence rate to be higher in prison than in the outside community. The respondents voiced different opinions over whether HIV-infected inmates should be segregated within prisons. In general, staff showed greater awareness than inmates of HIV transmission routes through sexual activity, but there was evidence that both groups needed further education. Both staff and inmates favored condom distribution as a harm reduction and minimization strategy.
